valentine's day is for the birds

 Next Friday is my last day.

I started working lunches at this charming little sandwich shop almost five years ago, after staying home for 12 years raising babies. I remember how strange it was to be out of the house without a toddler, where people didn't look at me as a mom, where I could talk to ADULTS, get a PAYCHECK...all things that seemed foreign at the time. I had no idea it would become a second home and how my managers and co-workers would become family, forever attached to my heart. Although beginning another chapter of life is exciting, sometimes putting the old story up on the shelf is harder than anticipated, and you just want to cry. And then celebrate. And then cry some more...

But enough about that.

This season of sentiment I gave in just a bit to the holiday spirit, as it were. No window displays, banners or buntings, but I did have something in mind to splatter on our beloved wall.

(get it...splatter? Bird? It was funny in my head...)

Everyone got to pick their celebrity crush,

and if they couldn't decide? I picked for them.

{the branches are pieces of Dollar Store "wood grain" contact paper leftover from sweet Rudolph}

If I got to spend a night on the town with any man other than my husband, you know who it would be. Even if he IS terrified of what may be lurking under my oh-so-modest feathers...

{as he should be}

Happy Valentine's Day.

  1. This is rad! I love the Mark Ruffalo one and obviously Stefon. I had a crush on him the first time I saw him and have actually kept it to myself...I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!! ;)

    1. Who else knows the "perfect" hotspots? Plus, we can smooth down each other's hair all night. It doesn't get more fun than that!

  2. That is so cute! Leaving a job is sad. And exciting. And scary. What are you going to do now? Wishing you the best!

    1. I'll be working as a receptionist like a grown-up. In the very loosest sense of the word :)

  3. "for the birds" is pretty darn clever as your work always is. And your statement "sometimes putting the old story up on the shelf is harder than anticipated" also clever and both real and true ... I'm in the same place / different reasons and am finding it super challenging. Best wishes to you on writing your next chapter and I hope you'll post about it ... I'm sure it would inspire others who are in the same place. Robin

    1. Challenging is such a nice way to put it :) I've been on the search for over a year and it's just now that the position and the timing is right. Unfortunately, that doesn't make it any less frightening. Every little birdie has to 'fly the nest" at some point, even if they are scared to death. It's an essential part of their development, right?

    1. Fingers crossed that I'll catch on quickly and not be a complete idiot.

      P.S. Why are you reading silly posts on your birthday? You're supposed to be out celebrating!!

  6. It's so scary leaving what we know, but I like to fool myself by continuously calling it "exciting". I'm sure you'll be great in your new job. I hope the sandwhich shop throws you a massive, extremely emotional and hilarious farewell!

    1. Exactly! And, as my daughter pointed out, "being afraid and being excited feel basically the same." Either way, my tummy is a mess anytime I think about it. So I shan't.
