What does the fox say? {a Christmas tree topper}

My husband came home and was disturbed to hear Sierra and I discussing this years holiday tree.

"Why we can't just put a star or angel or some other normal thing that normal people put on their normal Christmas tree and call it done?" he asked, shaking his head.

As if.

It would seem that the last 19 years together hasn't taught him anything.

In my defense, it's not a flamingo.

Christmas 2010

Or it's alter ego - the zebringo/flamibra.

Christmas 2011

And since we didn't even PUT UP a tree last year, shouldn't everyone just rejoice?
Even though I am agreeable to deck our halls for 2013, my brain still doesn't think in terms of angels or bows or glitter. We need something that makes us smile. Something that warms our hearts and makes us think happy Christmasy thoughts. We need this.

Not even a "normal" tree skirt was used. A tablecloth from the hall closet worked just fine.

Ingredients: a stuffed animal from Sierra's hoard upstairs,

some fishing line, two bamboo skewers wrapped in floral tape, and wire.

The wrapped skewers act as a base,

and then Mr. Fox has some fishing line wrapped around his neck and tied on to that base.
Morbid much?

The quote bubble was printed from the computer, colored with Sharpie, and hung from a clear pushpin in the ceiling and dangled from more fishing line (if you look real close you can see the two strings).

It sways oh so gently in the warm breeze of a nearby heat vent, but that just adds to the MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS.The season should come alive, y'all.

{maybe it's just moving to the beat...my youngest is constantly singing the song}

The rest of the tree isn't "fox" themed, but it doesn't matter. My ornament taste falls within only a few categories: anything that looks old, food/candy, animals, or toys. All things that would've been hung on a traditional Christmas tree, no?

Never fear- the flamingos haven't disappeared. They're sprinkled throughout and blend in seamlessly with the white trash abandoned shopping cart (a gift from my sister).

What's topping your tree this year?

  1. I love this idea of changing out the topper! Might have to jump on that band wagon.

    1. I keep hearing that and then think "Do I even know anyone that is 'normal'? What does that even mean?"

  3. a perfect summation to this year's Christmas tree. You have out done yourself! Now to find that allusive Miley Cyrus twerking ornament....or not.

  4. Normal is totally overrated! My tree topper is Yoda and he's glorious! I also have toys shoved on the tree that the kids HAD TO HAVE and then discarded moments after receiving them. I have an Edward Cullen, Spiderman and Skeletor action figures hiding in random areas on my tree. The tree skirt also doubles as my sons go-to ghost costume! I love your whimsy and creativity...I bet your husband secretly loves it!!

  6. Finally I've found a like minded family! We change our tree topper every year. It's fun to come up with a new one.
    Past toppers:
    - handmade fox with feather wings
    - Stewie (family guy)
    - the Tardis (doctor who)
    - a fuzzy handmade "monster"

    1. FEATHER WINGS!! The only thing he's missing...

What better to reminisce about your childhood christmas traditions without rattling off the menagerie of toppers? "Remember that one year it was ________ !"

The holidays are about making memories - let's make them awesome ones!

  10. The very best part is the thought bubble. I'm sure you are the only person with a fox topper AND a thought bubble. You have a career in display marketing just waiting for you - maybe a store like Anthropologie.

  11. I think it looks great, love the ones from the past too. I'm a traditional girl and we are probably going to do the angel like we always do. It's what we like and who we are, traditional, so an angel it is.

    1. Always always ALWAYS do what you like! You should surround yourself with what makes you happy, whether that's an angel or a fox :) I'm sure it's beautiful!

  13. We almost didn't put a tree up this year. I bought a big angel to put in the front yard and when it came time to put the tree up I said let's just put the angel, my kids thought about it for a minute I kept saying come on it will be fun, but my daughter insisted on a tree. If y'all figured out what the heck the fox is talking about let me know!

    1. The kids always do it to you! I really thought about not putting up a tree again this year...last year was so nice that I didn't have to lug all the bins down to to turn around and lug them all back a few weeks later. Then, as I was talking to a customer at work, she mentioned that doesn't decorate anymore because her kids are all grown...and then I thought "WHAT AM I DOING??" I'll have plenty of time when they are older to not get stuff out if I don't wanna, but RIGHT NOW is when their memories are being created that they'll have with them forever. Even if I don't go full throttle, I half to at least put it in first gear.
