But I digress.
Suffice it to say, that's not the situation here.
Nope.
I'm looking at an empty space that I wanna turn into a place to play/use/store my junk, but I don't have any money to do it with. I guess that means technically I have NO budget. Crap. So I can either:
* wait years until I save up enough money to "do it right" with cabinets and countertops and the perfect lighting sconces and cute matching storage bins
OR
* go through my stuff and figure out what I could live without
*actually list said stuff online instead of just letting it sit in a pile. For three weeks.
*take that money ($75 when all was said and done - I'M RICH!) and check Craigslist all summer until I had what I needed.....or close enough
*take that close enough stuff and make it work
Guess which option I chose.
Dresser = $25
Pie safe thing: $25

Desk = $20
Just a little cream paint and then a bit o' distressing on the bottom. I left the top alone - sanded marks, gouges and all - so I don't have to worry about messing it up. Neat and careful aren't my thing.
El Lampo = $5
And I can still hang up things that I love.
A piece of something from the thrift store that nobody wanted (because what the heck is it?)= $2.42
I just flipped that top crossbar thing to the back, screwed it into the wall,
Here's what we got when we moved in.
Here it is now.
It's beautiful and happy. And now more than ever I realize I have absolutely no vision. I would see a discarded drawer and think, "Who's the jerk who left this crap out?" But, you see possibilities. Admiration, lady. Admiration.
ReplyDeletemaren, that made me laugh out loud. :)
Deleteme too lol!
DeleteI love it! What a great craft space you have now, and it looks like it cost at least a grand. Great job.
ReplyDeleteMarti
wow, what a wonderful transformation!! You did and AWESOME job on it!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks sooo good! And looks like it cost lots of money! I love all of the fun touches like the stripes on the wall, numbered dresser drawers and wrapping paper storage. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI'll pay you to come and work your magic at my house, but I'm going to have to sell some stuff on Craigslist first...
This is so ingenious. I especially love the numbered drawers and chalkboard-painted dry erase board. So amazing how you turned some oddities into a FABULOUS work space. Love.
ReplyDeleteRebecca, I am in love! What a great space you put together, fun just like you. And the light that comes in, so sunny and happy! I totally get what you mean about $10,000 budgets. It cracks me up that new show on tv about the Novegratz's they boast that they can show you how to design on a small budget. Last week they bought a chandelier for $1000 bucks and hung it in a tree outside, several of them actually. How is that inexpensive? Tv is so far from reality! Anyway great job lady! Now will we see more of you???
ReplyDeleteWow, it looks great! Fantastic job and I love all the before and afters.
ReplyDeleteI am speachless! (this is a hard thing to do..what can I say, I have a lot of opinions)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE, no ADORE this room! I also LOVE your wrapping paper. No, it would be fair to say that I covet many, many things in your room.
Amazing job! You should be very, very proud!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Happy Weekend!

ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful!! What inspiration to take so many unmatching discarded things and create such joy! I want to come craft in here!!!
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job. Hooray for true ingenuity to pull things together. It takes a lot of talent to see potential in junk. :) Enjoy that new space.
ReplyDeleteHow in the world did you go from no post yesterday around this time to a post and 35 comments! Dang girl! I guess we all check your blog on a daily basis! I love the room! It's awesome! Your style is above all that I've seen!
ReplyDeleteAhh, so creative Rebecca!!! I couldn't agree more about the "faux budgets" - it's ridiculous! I love so much about it - and really love that your room is so unique and not a cookie cutter look!
ReplyDeleteI've re-posted this on my Super Savings Facebook page to inspire my readers too - hope that's ok! You've done such a wonderful job!
~ Mara @ Super Savings
Oh my goodness girl! Will you decorate my house?? This is absolutely amazing and beautiful. WOW!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely spectacular!!! So fun and functional! Love your style so much!!!
ReplyDeleteLove This ALOT
ReplyDeleteWhat the crap? That is seriously the same room? Crazy, but it looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteWow, It came out amazing! I cannot believe that this is the same space. I would never have seen that in the original room. I think my favorite is the desk. I am a new follower from Tatertots and Jello. Vicky @ www.messforless.net
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your craft room! I am so jealous! We moved 3 years ago to probably the countries greatest location...but I have absolutely no space dedicated to creating. I can't wait to get my hands on a space all of my own. I love your vision! Your brain must work a lot like mine. Ugly in its present state doesn't matter...that's what paint was created for! I will admit...I would have walked past the lamp....I couldn't see its beauty. But your lamp is awesome! I wish you could come over to play!
ReplyDeleteVERY nice!!
ReplyDeleteJaimee @ craft-interrupted.blogspot.com
You know what? You're a freaking genius.
ReplyDeleteI'm serious.
I love that wrapping paper holder. Awesome.
It looks amazing! Even your wrapping paper is so cute! Love all the color, the whole room looks great! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is just beautiful! You have done an amazing job at every step of the way. I would kill for a craft room like that :)
ReplyDeletewell done!! what a great space & fabulous post!!
ReplyDeleteHow big is your house?! You must have like 27 rooms. You know where I keep my crafts? In a rubbermaid box under Mario's bed, and there's still room in it for more! But seriously, this room is covered in awesome sauce. On a serious note, just saw your other blog. How frightening, I'm so glad he's okay.
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely gorgeous!! Great job!
ReplyDeletea-frickin-mazing...! i swear i would sleep in there, right on top of the desk every night, if you would let me...:o)
ReplyDeletei LOVE the wrapping corral, the walls...HeLLo!...and that honkin' green dresser...!
oh, and the drawer hung on the wall, genius...<3
i love u,
love, me
KerryLynne
I love the blue of the lamp. Especially on the green dresser. Now I think I should paint my executive desk. Maybe I should do that and post my craft room.
ReplyDeleteThis is so ridiculously cute, that it almost doesn't seem possible. Houses that look like that only live in magazines! Oh wait, this is Sis. Wisor, and she's awesomesauce. :)
ReplyDeleteI am so so so jealous. I don't even know you and I'm mad at you.
ReplyDelete:) Seriously though, great work! For now I can only dream of having a craft room!
WHERE DO YOU GET A BRAIN LIKE THIS?! I NEED ONE!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited I decided to pop over and check for a new post!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm late, but late is better than never!! Everything turned out SO super cute!!! I think I'm going to do a post on my blog and share this! Don't you love my excessive use of exclamation points?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteStumbled on your blog and after seeing this one room I think we should be BFFs. K? K!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful job!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice job. You are super creative. You help me think outside the box. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteBloody love it! What an inspiration! I was a real shabby chic-er and thought it would be great to get all 'grown up' guess what it's not. Kudos to you!
ReplyDeleteThat is some mad skills.
ReplyDeleteTruly an artist hand thus a craft room as pretty as this one shines ! Love it !
ReplyDeletethis is most definitely the best blog post I have seen. ever. thank you so much for bringing light into my world! you are brilliant! x
ReplyDeleteSeriously? That is the BEST room makeover ever. Fantastic.
ReplyDeletewow wish i even had a room!! nice ..
ReplyDeleteblog hopping and found your site and this makeover, absolutely fantastic! I'd hire you to do mine!!
ReplyDeleteYour room is so AWESOME! ...and I might have an answer for the mystery item before you so cleverly reused it. It may be a monitor stand as I've made a couple of these from old stereo boxes and they look just like that. Now that I have new, bigger flat screens, I can take your lead and make them into something really clever! THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteVery inspiring. I'm struggling with the "I want a beautiful functional space" and "I have no money" problem too. Now I just gotta make it happen.
ReplyDelete:-)
NICE! What an awesome redo and I am thoroughly impressed with all the repurposing. Very cool and you are one lucky lady to get that much space for your craft!
ReplyDeleteWow, wow, wow! Right now I have to craft on my dining room table and haul supplies back and forth from my outdoor shed. Some day when I live in a big enough house to have even a small space for crafting, I will remember this for inspiration (and maybe copy a few things). ;) Great colors, great up cycling, wonderful original ideas.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely to see a green and creative turn on revamping a craft room.
ReplyDeleteSO COOL! I can only imagine what wonderful crafts will come from vision like yours...
ReplyDeletePretty sweet.
ReplyDeleteSo cool!!!
ReplyDeleteYes! THIS is what I mean by "budget makeover"! Thank you for the inspiration for my own space. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteGENIUS! You really are inspiring. So many things I've wanted to do with my house but have been waiting until I could have it "perfect" ... off to make my lists and hope I come up with something even half as awesome as you have!
ReplyDeleteCompletely awesome. Hi-Five.
ReplyDeletevery cool! I can't believe you managed to get that desk for $20!
ReplyDeleteAnd now, I can buy those printer trays I've been eyeing off, but had no idea what I could use them for.
Wow! Amazing job! Just saw your reno on Apartment Therapy! :)
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I'm currently working on my room right now so I'm totally taking notes from this really great design. Being a college student, I'm also on the same line of no dinero. :)
This is absolutely the very best transformation I have ever seen to truly create something out of nothing. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteSaw this on Apartment Therapy and had to check it out! WOW! I can't believe how creative you are! It looks like it belongs in a crafting magazine! And I love all of your posts!!!! I'll be back!
ReplyDeleteTonya

you may not have budget but you've got imagination ,good taste and good hands! I loooooooove the result!
ReplyDeleteThe drawer is pure brilliance. I'm so inspired. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate this post. I am always working with little to zero money, Every now and then I feel like I wish I had more and then remember I don't need it. All I need is time and elbow grease. :) This room is inspiring.
ReplyDeleteYou rock! I love the dresser, the fan pinwheel paper things on the chalkboard and the giftwrap corral. You've got great imagination.
ReplyDeleteOoh I love love love it!! My favorite touches are the striped walls and the chalkboard -- although it's all great. And the tips are awesome, too. Now, to move into a house with an extra room... ;)
ReplyDeleteHoly Moly!! I love your room!! You did so much amazing stuff!! I am in awe!!
ReplyDeleteWow! Just saw this featured on Everything Etsy...all I can say is "amazing!" So clever!
ReplyDeleteexcellent!....smiles
ReplyDeleteAMAZING!!! And totally inspiring!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter sent me to your blog because she said you reminded her of me. Now I know why.
ReplyDeleteDuring the 16 months that we spent planning her wedding, I was scheming over what I would do with her old bedroom, which was to become my new office. I searched garage sales, picked up a few super sale items at Michaels, haunted blogs and web sites where other people featured their craft rooms, plotted it all out on graph paper (even cutting out little pieces of "furniture" that I rearranged weekly) and waited for the big day.
I've been moved in for about a year now, and my space, like yours, isn't graced with luxurious cabinets or perfect lighting, it is filled with pieces I enjoy, and snippets of the life I love.
Thanks for sharing your space! If you would like to see a glimpse of mine, here's one of my blog posts: http://studiovalerie.blogspot.com/2011/06/storage-with-style.html
Count me in as one of your followers!

oh my! That is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteFINALLY!!! A fellow Scorpio who thinks the same way I do when it comes to living spaces. I love your room!
ReplyDeleteFabulous! I just need your vision when scouring Craigslist :)
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I'm am SO jealous! You did such a great job! And on a REAL budget :). Seriously, so awesome!
ReplyDeleterebecca,
ReplyDeleteyou and your(budget)craft room rock! the striped paneling and numbered drawers are pure genius. love how you purged and downsized to reallocate your money. doesn't it make for a more streamlined and organized area?!
you live up to your (blog)name for sure.
judi
This is fabulous!!! I love how you've put it all together. I love repurposing old discarded things and you've certainly given me some new ideas.
ReplyDeleteNew follower here!

ReplyDeleteI found your blog through "Roadkill Rescue" and I just love your post and the fact that you re-purposed these pieces to make a functional and darling craft room! Kudos to you! Fun post!

WOW! Just love your style and stick-to-it'ness of your budget! Some folks really don't get it when one says "limited budget"... You are a STAR! TFS this awesome makeover...

I am in total awe! I just happened upon this site from road kill rescue and my mouth is literally on the floor..........you are just wowie zowie ahhhhhhhhmaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing! I am now going to march right to the subscribe button and hook myself up to this site!
ReplyDeleteI saw you on Roadkill Rescue & this transformation is amazing! Congrats on having a great creative space!
ReplyDeletethank you for a post with a real budget. Fantastic Job! What fun to see all the pictures.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I just found your blog and it's kinda like looking into a mirror. No, seriously. you should check mine out. If I didn't know any better, I'd think the same person wrote both -- we have almost identical writing styles. (Creeeepy.) Consider me a new subscriber!
ReplyDeleteYou've inspired me. I have a large craft room but haven't put an inch of effort into making it an inspiration to myself as I work. You have therefore inspired me to make that change and I thank you!
ReplyDeletereally fabulous... just popped over from Pinterest and I'm hooked. Make me follower #701. www.inbetweenlaundry.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI love this!! I need a new craft space and you have a lot of great ideas that are definitely worth trying! Thanks so much for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteFabulous job!! Great ideas and a great area!
ReplyDeletewhat an awesome job on your craft room. I love all or your "upcycles" Plus it appears you have great lighting!! Thanks so much for sharing
ReplyDeleteFound via Pinterest and all I can say is AMAZING!!! Love every bit of what you did and how you showed what a small budget can do.
ReplyDeletefound this on pinterest. So may great ideas! The wrapping corral amazed me! How did you think of that???!!!
ReplyDeleteJust found this on Pinterest and it's amazing! I like your style, love the green dresser, esp those numbers! Way to go!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove everything :)
I have been looking for smething for all my paint/glitter like an old medicine cabinet or something all summer and nothing! Then I see you turn a DRAWER into a storage cabinet for the same stuff! Do you have any idea how many BROKEN dressers I have come across this summer???? Drawers galore! UGHHHHH! Your pretty smart lady!
ReplyDeleteAmazing, Rebecca! Truly inspiring and I LOVE that you did it now instead of waiting. you.go.girl!
ReplyDeleteokay, this is amazing. what i want to know is where did you find the dresser and pie hutch for so cheap? maybe my area's craigslist is just too high priced or i'm looking in the wrong places. great job. i'm actually most jealous of your tiled floor. my quilting/crafting/sewing room is just the extra bedroom and it's carpeted. i hate the carpet but i can't change it because it's an upstairs bedroom. you did a fantastic job.
ReplyDeleteWow, you turned it in a very cool room, i love how you did it, thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteHugs
Maria
Now, that is just gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteOne word...Genius!!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love it! Simple!
ReplyDeleteKUDOS to u for envisioning this and putting it together. It is so eclectic and inspirational. Amazing job. Can't wait to get back to the drawing board on my space.
ReplyDeleteAWESOME!!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it satisfying to repurpose furniture to something so useable? I hope you love to be in this space and camp out there making more great stuff!!
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas. Thanks for sharing. May I ask why you replaced the door with a window?
ReplyDeletelove!!
ReplyDeleteNone of the windows or doors have changed- who has money for that?? The photo is just taken closer up. Those red curtains hang over the (30 year old non-insulated) sliding glass door so that my stuff doesn't blow around when it's windy. Literally :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love what you've done with the space. I also found this on pinterest. I can't wait to have a space and make it work.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! I just spotted this on Pinterest and had to clik. Great job!! Seriously, $75!! That's what I'M talking about! I have a teeny little corner in my bedroom that I'm trying to decide how to turn into a craft nook for myself, and if you can do ALL THAT for $75, my little corner should come in under $20. Thanks for the fabulous inspiration!
ReplyDeleteVery impressive! That last photo was the WOW factor- Great job!
ReplyDeleteI found you via Pinterest, and glad that I read this article.
Mandy
I wondered over from pinterest. I love this; even more so b/c I've seen some of this ugly stuff at the store and you made it look fab! And your humor is right on, chick. You'd be my cup o'tea for a rainy day, lol. :)
ReplyDeleteI want to move into this room. I would even sleep in a sleeping bag, right on the tile floor.. Great job, it looks awesome and so functional for actually making stuff!
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Word. I am in awe of your creativity. This room is truly a work of heart (and art.) You can't even put a price on it. I think my favorite pieces are the "drawer in the alley," "the old crate" and wouldn't ya know it? the "Piece of something!" I'm truly amazed! Thanks so much for sharing this! :)
ReplyDeleteI think you are my new hero! I want to give my craft room a mak-over so badly. You have completely inspired me! Interestingly enough, apple green and black were the colours I had in mind. I can't wait for spring, to start hitting the yard sales and collecting some good stuff to put in my room!
ReplyDeleteI'm probably in love with you.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. Amazing. Pat yourself on the back. You did an incredible job! Fun, functional, unique, and GORGEOUS.
ReplyDeleteWow....awesome job! This looks really, really nice. And a great place to be creative. Thanks for sharing your tips!
ReplyDeleteWow. I am in awe of your ability to look at stuff that most people would pass by and turn it into something A) Useful and B) Beautiful.
ReplyDelete(Side note: designers/magazines throw around the word "budget" like they do "small house". 2500 square feet is not small. 400 is small. Even 700 is small. I'm talking to you, Better Homes and Gardens!)
Oh, thanks for sharing! Our second bedroom is called the 'junk' room because everything that we can't find room for get thrown in there. I've been wanting to make it a craft/guest room but have exactly the same budget as yours, $0! And looking at all the lovely but pricey organizing furniture and shelving made me think I'll never get it done. Your post has really made me start thinking of how I can re-purpose some of my 'junk' to get an adorable room like yours. (Love the lamp color by the way!)
ReplyDeleteThanks again!
Wow. So. In. Love!!! You've definitely inspired me to DIY my room on a budget. Chalkboard paint = awesome
ReplyDeleteI found you via Pinterest.. and I am amazed and inspired.
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with this post, and hope to have a space similar one day! Absolutely GORGE!!
ReplyDeletewow! This is great. Now all I need is random pieces of furniture laying around my house. Darn LOL
ReplyDeleteWOW!! I found you off of Pintrest. You have awesome vision! Some of those things I would NEVER have thought to do!! And you did it all on a "regular" person's budget! Great job!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte J
Wow - you did such a great job!!
ReplyDeleteSarah from The House That Ag Built
This room is so cute! I love ALL of it! Very creative!
ReplyDeleteGreat Job! You are very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteCome to Texas and make me a room. : ) Please! I love your room.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you do it!! How do you get "the vision" of the finished room or does it come together as you go? You are gifted.
ReplyDeleteHello
ReplyDeleteI wanted to let you know i have featured your tutorial to my blog for my top "Numbered" Projects of 2011

happy new year
Lorena
This is exactly how I re-do a room. I am on the what can I practically get for free plan as well. Man, I'm sure the hardest part was dealing with that brick wall. Pain in the butt. You did a GREAT job! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThat room is better than it would be if you HAD spent money on it. Fabulous (clapping, standing ovation)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great job on the craft room!! I still have my little corner in the spare room I need to organize but the shelving from dressers has given me a few ideas. Great job!
ReplyDeleteAmazing is all I can say. I wish I had the eye to figure out how to use scrap like you do. It is beautiful. I bet you love it.
ReplyDeleteWow, you have a great eye for redesigning or repurposing things! Fun craft room! :-)
ReplyDeleteYour before and after pictures are inspiring! You can make any old thing look new and hip. I hope i can do these transformations in my own home!
ReplyDeleteI swear...this is what it's all about. Making cool stuff from what you have. This is BEYOND inspired...
ReplyDeleteI am stunned and impressed and totally inspired.
Brava!
Now THIS is my kind of decorating! What a fantastic job you did! WOW! I am redecorating my house at the moment...... on NO budget. I am inspired!
ReplyDeleteWell done and so creative. This is how we all should do it. Of course if we all did it then there would be no great finds left, some people have to go spend money at a store, and then get rid of their old stuff so we can find it....right? Great job and thank you for sharing you great ideas.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love ur ideas....I NEVER post messages but here I had too...fun and beautiful
ReplyDeleteSo clever! Totally inspiring!!
ReplyDeleteOnly just found you blog, but your ideas are fabulous! Really great ideas, very well done. This is really working to a budget. You have inspired me.
ReplyDeleteit's adorable! love the paper bunting. love the lamp. love the huge "new" chalkboard. i agree with you about the shows that talk about budget... like my budget isn't the 1000.00... it's more like whatever i can find at the thrift store and craigslist. lol.
ReplyDeletei think your paper holder was probably a fish tank stand at one point. open in the back for the pump wires etc.
awesome awesome space!! very inspirational! Thanks for sharing it! It looks like there is a lot of fantastic crafting energy in there!
ReplyDeleteYou should be very proud of yourself! "Seeing" the beauty in found objects isn't always an easy thing to do, but it appears that you have a real eye for it. Your new space is not only charming, but colorful and welcoming. They say that one man's trash is another man's treasure...I think that I'm going to start looking at my own trash a little bit differently before tossing it. I'd hate to think that I gave away something that really had potential if only I had used it differently. I found you on Pinterest and have hooked you onto my 'Blogs I Love' board! Can't wait to go back and see what other great ideas you have for me!
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the coolest rooms I have ever seen! Great job! I love how you are able to upcycle like that!
ReplyDeleteThis is AMAZING!!! Please come to my house and keep me on track!!!!Just kidding,a girl can dream.Keri
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!
ReplyDeleteYou are totally amazing! Please teach me how to do this stuff! susanbeechler@att.net
ReplyDeleteFabulous!
ReplyDeleteSimply inspirational. Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! You are so clever--I LOVE it! YOu've inspired me to go thrift shopping and though I don't have a "room" to dedicate, I do have a corner of my basement I may be able to convert! Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteVery inspirational! LOVE everything you have done- and colors too!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is hilarious! And the craft room is an inspiration. Bravo!
ReplyDeletegreat job! Perfect craft room!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to borrow some of your vision. Reorganizing my craft area now and could really use it:)
ReplyDeleteYour an inspiration! Now I just need to find an empty room in the house... How long until the oldest moves out? :)
ReplyDeleteI love it! You are amazing! I can't believe you did all that for 75.00
ReplyDeleteGreat Job, lots of wonderful ideas
ReplyDeleteWell, I just saw this and it is very cool . You did a great job,Lady. So thrifty too~! I also have made my studio out of anything I can get for next to nothing or freebies. It is not as cute as yours though. You have given me inspiration! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!! I wasnt sure in the beginning to be honest but the end result is great. You've really outdone yourself :)
ReplyDeleteI just wish I had an unused space - really wish for a day that everything can just be taken out and can start again!
ReplyDeleteIt looks fantastic too, I can just see kiddies sitting at the big desk creating masterpieces for hours x
Genius! I wish I had a room that big. I like these ideas. I have to figure out a way to incorporate it into my bedroom...which is also a craft room :)
ReplyDeleteThe changes are huge. I didn't almost recognize it.
ReplyDelete
