How To Create A {Budget} Craft Room

And I don't mean "budget" like they do on magazine covers and TV shows or even (say it ain't so!) design blogs. That budget word is thrown around way too much. I realize it literally means that you only have so much money to spend, but by that definition, isn't everybody on a budget? Who has UNLIMITED resources? Even somebody who has $10,000 to spend is still working with a "budget," no?

But I digress.

Suffice it to say, that's not the situation here.

Nope.

I'm looking at an empty space that I wanna turn into a place to play/use/store my junk, but I don't have any money to do it with. I guess that means technically I have NO budget. Crap. So I can either:

* wait years until I save up enough money to "do it right" with cabinets and countertops and the perfect lighting sconces and cute matching storage bins

OR

* go through my stuff and figure out what I could live without

*actually list said stuff online instead of just letting it sit in a pile. For three weeks.

*take that money ($75 when all was said and done - I'M RICH!) and check Craigslist all summer until I had what I needed.....or close enough

*take that close enough stuff and make it work

Guess which option I chose.

Black paint from the garage = Free

Dresser = $25
There was obviously doors in front of these little drawers at some point, and even after a coat of paint, they still looked a little odd. Not odd like interesting, more like,"Hey, shouldn't there be doors there?" So to make them hold their own (get it? drawer? hold? furniture humor...) they each got a number.
Pie safe thing: $25
A coat of paint evens out the mismatched shelves, and now my oppressed hall closet is freed from random pieces of fabric.
Drawer from the alley = Free
Desk = $20 Just a little cream paint and then a bit o' distressing on the bottom. I left the top alone - sanded marks, gouges and all - so I don't have to worry about messing it up. Neat and careful aren't my thing. El Lampo = $5
White Board from the kids room = Free
This guy's finish was so old (dry erase markers + scratchy surface = no bueno) that aside from being a great magnetic board, he didn't have anything else going for him. Nothing that some primer and two coats of chalkboard paint can't fix.
(Constant recognition - is this a need of all middle children or just mine?)
And I can still hang up things that I love.
Old crate from work turned ribbon storage= Free
A piece of something from the thrift store that nobody wanted (because what the heck is it?)= $2.42
I just flipped that top crossbar thing to the back, screwed it into the wall,
and now it's sturdy enough to corral wrapping paper.
Here's what we got when we moved in.
Here it is now.

Thank you for being a realistic person!! LOL I found you on Pinterest and am always shaking my head at how people are pinning these glamorous craft rooms. Isn't the idea to be crafty? USE YOUR "CRAFTY VISION"!! I'm always rearranging, reorganizing, repurposing in my house. I applaud your efforts to spread the "cheap" craft room idea. :) Thanks!

You have totally inspired me!! I am very envious- especially of your pie safe, crate, AND creativity! ;) I'd like to try to do the same!

You did an awesome job!! I especially like the crate thingy, for ribbon. as I have a crate like it. But...I have some spring type curtain rods, wouldn't those be handy to put your ribbon rolls on instead of stacking them? And the white board to black board thing is ingenious...

Love this craft room. You are quite the handy women I'd say :) Can I please get the paint name and color you used on the dresser. I love that shade of green.

OHHHH MYYYYY GOSSSSHHHH! i needed this article in my life! i hAAAte googling at "budget" craft rooms and getting rooms that cost hundreds of dollars (and not the low hundreds). I reeeally need help too. I am starting a small scrapbooking and crafting business from home and i need to define my space. I have the option of using my formal dining room or my garage. i would prefer my formal dining room bc lighting, heat/cooling, and cable (of course). thing is....i have a mental block on how to make it work. there are no doors to isolate it and i have small kids that love to touch EVERYTHING. i also have a wrought iron gate thingy that seperates it from my formal living room. i rent so i cannot make too many changes to the structure of the room. what can i do? i would greatly appreciate any ideas. can email pics. (this may be your calling!)

I LOVED your post. You did a fantastic job:) What an inspiration to others. You have a knack for this sort of thing and could probably scoop in a few extra bucks here and there by offering your services to those that have no vision, an empty space, and a pile of "get rid of it" stuff. I have been wanting to tackle our storage room (which half can be donated anyway) and turn it into a usable space. Between your blog (and humor...I love it!)and Pinterest I have enough ideas swimming around in my head to make it happen. Thanks for sharing and keep 'em coming!

Wow! I confess that when I followed the link from the Pin that claimed a craft room on "$0 budget," I assumed it was going to be another one of those lame ones where "$0 budget" actually means that some company subsidized their $10,000 room makeover. I was pleasantly surprised and inspired! Rock on!

GREAT job. you and me have the same kind of "budget"!

So, I saw an image on Pinterest. I fell in love so I decided to check it out. OMG, didn't think I would fall in love with everything! I so wish that I wasn't allergic t paint fumes! And single. Paint is ridiculously expensive too. BUT I will keep trying to create another dream room. I left my last one behind with my ex-fiancee. It broke my heart (leaving both) but I need to create a new one so thanks for the inspiration!

I love your ideas on how to take older furniture and turn it into something useful. I have a room I'm looking to set up for my sewing/crafting and I have the same budget you started with...none, Lol. Great job! The only thing that made me say Ouch was those beautiful natural wood walls that were painted over...I'm a sucker for natural wood. I love your chalkboard too! I may have to do this! Thanks for sharing!

I am inspired! This is what crafty design is all about. I would love to be able to afford the Candice Olstens of the world, but I can't. Therefore this is much more realistic for me. Your creation reminds me of the old and very entertaining HGTV with shows like design on a dime where the designers truly had to be creative.

What a great makeover. I was wondering, I've recently done a makeover for my sewing studio, but I have a problem. My sewing machine foot pedal cord doesn't reach the outlet. An extension cord only solves the power cord problem not the foot pedal cord issue of not being long enough. Do you have any suggestions for solving this?

This is absolutely amazing!!!! You have truly inspired me!! I'm a busy Mom, like all us Mom's, with 3 boys and 3 full time jobs! One of which is my own business so I'm wanting to turn my walk in closet to my home office...my "cloffice". I'm also wanting to have a " command center" in the kitchen and get my boys rooms organized....I love all your ideas!! I'm on a very, very, VERY low budget but hope I can tackle this huge task!! Any advice would be very much appreciated!!! It's just overwhelming to start!! :/ if you have time and any ideas/advice I'd be so grateful!!?!?!? My email is tashawilson5@yahoo.com Thanks for all your help!! Your room is amazing!!!!!!

It would be nice to have a separate area at home where you can make craft projects. The given photos above show that the room's design was well thought of and it does inspire creativity. Thanks for sharing!

You don't know how refreshing it is to see a room with color and some eclectic flair. I am overjoyed to see your room. I have looked at so many white and off white rooms on these blogs until I could scream. I'm talking about everyroom in the house (even the craft room) If I'm lucky I might see a light blue or green thrown in there. Do these people not have boys and dogs? Well I do and having to wash a white slipcover every day is not my cup of tea. Kudos to you and your imagination and especially your spunk. Thank you for using color. You are my hero!

Whoa! That's awesome. I agree with the "budget" thing. I, like you at the time, also have no budget. Sighh! But it's a little thing called LIFE!

Love your transformation! Love how you thought outside of the box or drawer as the case may be! Brilliant and so fun! I stand in awe!

This an awesome transformation! Job well done. Many mentioned your painted beadboard, which at first I didn't like - too much randomness. That is, until I realized - it's a piano!!!! Now THAT is toally cool. Plus all the repurposing. So, what you're saying is that I should start looking in my attic before going to a store...OK, I'm on it! Thanks for the inspiration!

Great job on you fabulous craft space. I love that you really did do it on a dime- so many say they did it on a budget but it sure wasn't the kind of budget I have!! My creative space looks much different then yours but on a tiny budget also!
