Because A Girl Can Only Do So Much Neutral Before She Snaps

A while back, I got rid of the deep gold paint that was downstairs, and lightened it up into a nice neutral beige. It worked. It was lighter. It was brighter. And, quite frankly, was so boring that it put me to sleep.

Hi. My name is Nelly No-Personality and I hate color.

Here's the problem: I don't hate color. But I do hate woodwork that doesn't have any book-boom pow, which clearly was the case here. What if I only did a little something something in the dining room? It's kind of it's own space, even though it's open to everything else. It wouldn't take that much paint. Or time. And if I hated it, I have plenty of generic-hardly-a-color-at-all-beige in the garage....

I went back and forth for months about it until last week, when an evening with nothing to do collided with a bout of PMS. Enter Laura Ashley "Apricot 6." (which isn't number 6 at all, it's #3) They should have named it "Happiness In A Can."

  1. I love everything about your dining room. Seriously. Obviously, the color is fantastic. Those curtains? Gah! And the poppy print. And a freakin' phone booth?!? Kill me now. Also, I want to prop big "R"s and ampersands on every surface in my house. But the other people in this house whose names do not begin with "R" might not like that. Even though it is the best letter.

  2. Boredom and PMS collides!

The fabric is beautiful, the colour pulls all of your elements together and the phone booth is perfect.

  3. Oh yes, I totally dig it. It seems to match so perfectly with everything else you have going on. I wish I had the confidence to do colors like that in my house!

  6. You've done more than just paint, girl. Wow, it's looking so good in there. I guess it's been awhile since you've posted project pics. I never never would have thought I'd like apricot, too many bad 80's decor associations, but it looks fantastic. What do you know, you CAN improve upon perfection. Do people just walk into your house and blather themselves silly with praise for your decorating skills? That must really never get old.

The gal that posted a pic of her son’s poop/bed mishap….yes, yes, that’s her! Let me tell ya…your blog is fab and so if your dining room! Love all the colors….so warm and cozy! Where in the world did you find that awesome phone booth? It’s a phone booth right?

  10. Here's the link for the curtain panels:

    And Heather:

If I would've seen the name of the swatch in the store I wouldn't have brought it home. How's that for paint name snobbery? In my mind it's not "Apricot 6," but rather "Earthy, Rusty, Burnt Terra Cotta Goodness."

Prolly just couldn't get that to fit on the chip.

  11. Love it! I agree with Rebekah about everything, especially your awesome curtains. I'm regretting my neutral color choice in my living room, too. There will be a paint project in my future.

  16. Hey Rebecca. It's Candra...remember me? Would it be okay if you gave me your curtains?? Thanks.

Or maybe it's the paint that makes them look so great. Either way, I love them.

  22. Girl, that red looks SO GOOD! I really liked the other color and thought it was perfect...pssssshhh, I was way wrong! I love that the color is red, but not RED, you know what I mean? I like the name your sister gave it, "Dragon's Eye Terra Cotta". Perfect. I personally loathe the color Terra Cotta, but not this color!
